(Aug. 26, 2016) — LCEC began in 1940 when no other utility would serve parts of Southwest Florida. Local residents rallied around community leaders in North Fort Myers to form an electric cooperative that would serve members.
The goal was to energize the community, not just with electricity, but also by helping with economic development, building the workforce and enhancing neighborhoods. Generating profit has never been part of the LCEC mission. Community responsibility, on the other hand, always has been.
Over the past 76 years LCEC has not strayed from this vision. The LCEC values include qualities such as working together toward success, commitment to integrity, diversity, and respect, and community responsibility. Employees are encouraged to donate their time and talents to causes, initiatives, and programs within the communities we serve.
Community Responsibility With United Way
Each year, community responsibility comes by way of employees dedicating themselves to supporting the United Way of Lee, Hendry, Glades and Okeechobee. For more than 10 years, LCEC has been among the top five contributors. Fundraising events are held throughout the year and payroll deducted pledges support the effort.
Employees also volunteer at the many agencies that United Way serves and serve on allocations teams to ensure that funding is being utilized wisely.
The organization also raises funds for the LCEC Power to Share program, which is administered by United Way. These funds are earmarked for those having difficulty paying their electric bill due to unforeseen circumstances. Last year, LCEC contributed more than $200,000 to United Way to help those in need.
But giving doesn’t stop there.
Health and Education Community Responsibility
Thousands of dollars are raised for health-related initiatives such as fighting heart disease, stroke and diabetes, battling cancer and lung disease, and raising awareness for autism. LCEC sponsors a multitude of 5K races throughout the service territory, with funds helping local organizations while also encouraging wellness through participation. Members of the LCEC PowerPac Run Club can often be found at the starting line.
A focus on education is aimed at building the future workforce. LCEC supports employees who wish to become school mentors and volunteers. Several employees are also involved in the Future Maker Coalition focused preparing today’s students for good jobs tomorrow. LCEC is also involved in the STEM program at the high school level as well as Odyssey of the Mind and several other educational programs.
The list of volunteerism and monetary support could go on and on because it is part of the fabric of our business. We deliver reliable electricity and quality service at the lowest price possible and we energize our communities … not because we have to, but because it is the right thing to do.
